These vines lie in a sun-catching amphitheatre adjoining Meursault 1er cru Les Perrières. When you climb the slope, you can understand why the vineyard is named “under the donkey’s back”, as the vines are sheltered to the north by a huge, long hummock of stones and trees which resemble the slumbering animal. Colour is bright, green-gold, with lovely, ripe aromas of great elegance. First impression in the mouth is of full-bodied richness, then creamy texture emerges, followed by just the right amount of acidity to balance the whole. This is a gorgeous wine, which aged in barrels (of which 25% were new) until September 2016; since then it has been maturing in tank, while all its component parts meld gently together, while retaining maximum freshness. This will age well, but it may be very hard to resist enjoying it from the moment of shipment (for drinking 2017–2022+).
