Clos des Chênes lies to the south of Volnay, high on the sometimes windy hillside. It often gives grapes with thick skins and firmer tannins than are found in more sheltered spots. It is one of the most characterful First Growths of Volnay, with the potential to age and gain in complexity for two, three or more decades. The Bouley wine comes from two plots, one being about 45, and one about 60 years old. Colour is medium deep, garnet red, the nose showing black fruits and floral character. Palate is very expressive, showing vibrant, dancing fruitiness, with a dense rich middle and chewy, splendid aftertaste. This is a wine with terrific potential, for laying down 10 years or more (for drinking 2020-2035+).
