The clay-rich sub-soil of these vineyards retained moisture throughout the dry, hot months of July and August, allowing grapes to progress to full ripeness, while retaining their freshness. The wine is assembled from 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc, the average age of the vineyard now being 40 years. It is one of the most complete, best value Saint-Emilions we know, and particularly successful in 2016. Colour is medium-deep, rich purple, the nose showing bright, open fruit, recalling cherries. The various lots of wine are being carefully rotated through barrels of different ages, allowing flavour development, with gentle softening of tannins. The wine has bright fruitiness, rich middle-palate and refreshing, splendidly lively aftertaste (for drinking 2019-2025+).
