The Fusilier Vineyard is named in honor of Proprietor Sam Neill`s father, Major Dermot Neill. A soldier in the Royal Irish Fusilier Regiment for 20 years, he retured home to Dunedin, New Zealand, where he ran the family Wine & Spirit business, Neill & Co. Planted in 2000, The Fusilier is 5.6 hectares of Pinot Noir vines, on rolling, alluvial, north-facing terraces at the western end of Felton Road, bordered by the vineyard of the same name. 1/3 whole bunches went into the vats here, with the wine subsequently aged for 11 months in French oak barriques, of which 1/3 were new. Pale ruby colour, the nose of this 2015 is beautiful and open, with spicy red fruit, dried herb and wild flower aromatics. Palate is full, perfumed and laden with multilayerd black fruit and violet-scented flavours. This is ripe, rich, energetic and texturally driven. There is good tension, verve and structure, the finish being persistent and refreshing (for drinking 2018-2023+).
